American Dream.
LYRICS & SONG ANALYSIS
Verse 1:
It seems like it all changed
Over night and then by day
We were all somebody else
And who knew we would find
Everybody in our tribe
That were couple clicks away
Pre-chorus:
Now that connections are made
Awareness and questions are raised
This is our own generation's way
Freedom and culture and power
Updated every hour
Is this the new American dream?
Chorus:
Oh, right here is where we're livin’
Influenced by the music, oh
We know what we got
And we got one shot
Let's make the most out of this
Infinite dreamin’
Spreading our lovin’, oh
Sending out a sign
That we got this right
Let's make the most out of this world
Verse 2:
People say that today
You and I have lost our touch
But I don’t see it all that way
We create instead of wait
To go out and make a change
Linking up to advocate
Bridge:
Know exactly when to
Connect and disconnect
Standing on two feet
On the things I believe
Not swayed by anything
That I may see
American Dream reflects my generation's collective sentiment and spirit when facing today's society, touching upon the influence of America's political and cultural climate and social media on our ideals and behavior. As the song progresses, it illustrates our journey figuring out how society operates and how social media platforms, such as Instagram, Snapchat, Tiktok, and Youtube, function within this society.
American Dream examines how my generation started oblivious to this social system, yet, eventually, discovered our respective roles and how we can contribute as individuals. The song's first verse describes our introduction to social media, painting a brief period of confusion and curiosity. The transitional pre-chorus demonstrates how we embrace and accept these platforms into our daily lives. However, we still want to know what more we can do with these resources. Using the chorus and the second verse, the song briefly hints at how my peers and I utilize these prevalent public platforms to advocate for critical social issues and raise awareness for positive social or policy-based progression.
