Changes In This Year (COVID)
LYRICS & SONG ANALYSIS
Trapped inside these four walls
While it feels like all of earth is burning down
Every time I'm scrolling through I
Find the world is full of trouble all around
And each night I pray
For better days
There's no-one to blame
That it has to be this way
Emptiness takes over but I continue to pray
For better days
Feel my energy depleting
I've been alone for too long
Not sure if anything would be the same
Even if this all went away
Miss the warmth I felt
When we connected physically
Separated now by glass
But hold onto your faith
That this will be a space
That'll be safe once again to live and breathe
Although we still have not completely walked out of this section of history, I believe that this song, Changes In This Year, illustrates people's overall experience and thoughts concerning COVID-19 and the whole process of going into a global lockdown and quarantine time after time. I hoped that this song accurately put into music, specifically lyrical format, people's disappointment in having to put their plans on hold, feeling a sense of barrier, or "glass," and lack of physical connection between friends and family, and being trapped at home for months on end, unable to see any improvement.
Changes In This Year not only describes the overwhelming sense of confinement, the "four walls," that everyone collectively endured, but also the waves of hope and faith that things will "be safe once again," get better, or return back to normal after the pandemic subsides. This song implicitly notes that even in times of pervasive darkness and negativity, people still find a way to see the positive aspects and the light at the end of the tunnel.
